Short answer
What is the A2 drone exam?
The A2 exam is a theory test that lets you fly drones in subcategory A2 of the open category. With the A2 certificate you can fly C2 drones (up to 4 kg) at shorter distances from people — essential for professional drone work.
The exam is taken in person at a traffic station run by Statens vegvesen. You must have passed the A1/A3 exam and completed the A2 course on flydrone.no (Luftfartstilsynet’s drone portal) first.

What you can do with an A2 certificate
With an A2 certificate and a C2 drone, you can fly closer to people than in A1/A3:
- 30 metres horizontal distance from people (normal mode)
- 5 metres in low-speed mode with a C2 drone
- Fly in built-up areas with controlled distances
- Professional drone work: property photography, weddings, inspections, film
The 1:1 rule
If you fly 50 metres high, you must keep at least 50 metres horizontal distance from people. This rule always applies in A2, regardless of low-speed mode.
