Drones under 250 grams

What applies to light drones like the DJI Mini series? Registration, the drone licence and insurance.

Short answer

You do not need the drone licence (dronelappen) for a drone under 250 grams. But if the drone has a camera, you must register as a drone operator on flydrone.no (NOK 230 a year) and mark the drone with your operator number. If it has no camera or is CE-marked as a toy, you do not need to register.

Do I need to register?

  • With a camera (not a toy): yes, registration on flydrone.no is required.
  • Without a camera: no.
  • CE-marked as a toy: no.

Do I need the drone licence?

No, there is no competence requirement for drones under 250 g. Luftfartstilsynet still recommends taking the free online course and exam for A1/A3 on flydrone.no, so that you know the rules.

Watch the weight

The limit applies to the drone’s total take-off mass, including anything you attach to it. If you add a camera, a gimbal or a heavier battery that takes the drone over 250 g, the requirements for heavier drones apply, including the drone licence. See a sample exam question about exactly this.

Insurance

Drones under 250 g in the open category are exempt from the liability insurance requirement, but Luftfartstilsynet recommends that you have it.

The rules on where to fly still apply

Light drones must also stay below 120 metres, within visual line of sight and away from no-fly zones such as airports. See where you can fly.
