Where can I fly a drone?

An overview of no-fly zones in Norway and the maps to check before every flight.

Short answer

You can fly a drone in most places in Norway, as long as you stay below 120 metres and follow the rules for your category. You need permission within 5 km of an airport, and flying is banned or restricted in central Oslo, protected areas, national parks and near military areas, prisons and embassies. Check the map at dronesoner.no before you fly.

No-fly zones in Norway

Airports
Not closer than 5 km without permission from air traffic services (the tower). Most airports take requests through the NinoxDrone2 app.
Central Oslo (R-102)
A restricted area. Requires special permission from Luftfartstilsynet.
Protected areas and national parks
Flying is banned or restricted. The rules vary from area to area.
Military areas and vessels
Do not fly in or near military areas.
Prisons and embassies
Do not fly nearby.
Sensor ban zones
Areas where the Norwegian National Security Authority (NSM) bans the use of cameras and sensors.
Danger areas
Activated by NOTAM. Check before every flight.
Rescue operations
Keep away from areas where emergency services are at work.

The 5 km rule around airports

You may not fly closer than 5 km to an airport without permission from air traffic services. Avinor’s drone map (Avinor runs most Norwegian airports) shows the zones, and most airports take requests through the NinoxDrone2 app.

Luftfartstilsynet has announced that the 5 km rule will probably be replaced by a requirement for permission within the airport’s control zone (CTR). No date has been set yet.

Maps and apps to check

  • dronesoner.no: Luftfartstilsynet’s map of geographical zones for drones.
  • Avinor’s drone map and NinoxDrone2: airport zones and requests for permission.
  • NOTAMs on ippc.no: temporary restrictions and activated danger areas.
  • NSM’s map: sensor ban zones.
  • The Norwegian Environment Agency’s map (Miljødirektoratet): protected areas and national parks.

Height and distance to people

Wherever you fly, the limit is 120 metres above the ground, and the drone must stay within visual line of sight. How close to people you may fly depends on the subcategory (A1, A2 or A3). See all the drone rules.
